Refractory products and their types

The production of refractories arose in connection with the development of metallurgy, and with the spread of thermal units for various purposes, it became one of the most important industries in all developed countries. The creation of a modern refractory industry in our country dates back to the period 1929 – 1940. Refractories are manufactured in the form of products (bricks, shaped and large-block products) and unformed materials (powders, masses, mixtures for concrete).

Refractories are materials made of mineral and synthetic raw materials that have a number of features:

  • tolerate ultra-high temperatures;
  • serve as thermal insulation;
  • do not melt;
  • withstand systematic mechanical load.

When developing thermal installations, it is required to pay primary attention to refractory materials, since the normal functioning of chamber, induction, arc furnaces and the size of overhaul intervals will depend on their choice. In other words, high-quality refractory prolongs the life of the furnace.

Refractory properties

Refractory products can be considered optimal only if they have the following properties:

  • mechanical strength and fire resistance under regular exposure to high temperatures;
  • the ability to tolerate sharp temperature fluctuations for a long time;
  • chemical resistance under conditions of furnace operation;
  • monolithic structure and constancy of shape during heating.

There are 4 main classes of materials and products that differ in temperature exposure:

  • low refractory: 700 – 1500 degrees Celsius;
  • fireproof: 1500-1750 degrees Celsius;
  • highly refractory: 1750-2000 degrees Celsius;
  • highest degree: more than 2000 degrees Celsius.

The average refractory index often ranges from 1600-1750 degrees. Often, products with these indicators serve at lower temperatures with a short-term increase to maximum.

Chemical composition of refractories

The most important indicators of refractory materials are their composition. The acidic lining is based on silicon oxide (SiO2), the main one is based on fused magnesite (MgO). During operation, the refractory is regularly subjected to stress from several factors, which include the following:

  • thermal;
  • mechanical;
  • metallurgical (chemical).

The refractory plate or shaped refractory product is regularly exposed to elevated temperatures, which reach 1650 degrees and above.
