The main characteristics and differences of the IAT and ILT furnaces

Smelting furnaces IAT and ILT are designed for induction melting of copper-containing and aluminum alloys. During melting, the temperature of liquid metal in ILT furnaces is in the range of 200 – 1300 C. In IAT-type furnaces the temperature of melting reaches 750 C.

Transformers are the power sources for IAT and ILT furnaces. Melting furnaces operate at an industrial frequency of 50 Hz. The use of these furnace complexes improves the chemical composition and homogeneity of the alloy and accordingly, the quality of castings.

Models of the IAT and ILT furnaces are marked according to the crucible capacity. For example, IAT – 0.4 holds 0.4 tons of alloy.

IAT and ILT furnaces: functional features

An inductor from a copper profiled pipe of an arched profile is mounted in the construction of the IAT and ILT melting furnaces. The turns are insulated with multi-layer insulation made of glass tape, mica tape and electrical insulating varnish. For melting copper-containing alloys, the IAT furnace is lined with quartzite or high-alumina ramming mass, and for aluminum alloys chamotte – quartzite mass is used to avoid accidents and associated losses for furnace repairs. The crucible is replaced when the lining is worn up to 30% anywhere in the crucible.

Particular qualities of melting in induction furnaces such as IAT and ILT

A feature of melting in a crucible induction furnace of the IAT and ILT series, which operating at an industrial frequency of 50 Hz, is the intense mixing of the metal caused by the action of electrodynamic forces. At the same time, the formation of a meniscus on the metal surface is observed.

Correct use of IAT and ILT induction crucible furnaces

Electric furnaces of ILT and IAT types are designed to operate under the following conditions:

  • The height of the crucible melting furnace IAT, ILT above sea level is no more than 1000 m;
  • Ambient temperature – from + 5 to + 45 ° С;
  • Environment has to be non-explosive, not containing aggressive gases and impurities;
  • No sediment-forming impurities in the cooling water;
  • The temperature of the cooling water should not be lower than the ambient temperature in the room by more than 15 ° С;
  • Vapors and dust in concentrations not exceeding those specified in GOST 2.1.005-88;
  • Vibration and shock in the place of installation of the electric furnace ILT and IAT should be absent.
